Cape Peninsula Marathon

Annual Cape Peninsula Marathon organized by Celtic Harriers Athletics Club in Partnership with Top Events on 16 February 2020

The marathon starts in Main Road, Green Point at 05h15, while the half marathon starts at the Bergvliet Sports Club at 07h00 with both routes taking runners on a fast, flat course through to the finish at the Naval Sports Grounds in Simon’s Town.

The event is organised by Celtic Harriers in association with Top Events and is an official qualifier for the Two Oceans Marathon and Comrades, with many runners using it not only as their qualifier but also as their long training run.

The Cape Peninsula Marathon is run in accordance with the rules of ASA and WPA.

WPA Champions 2020

The Cape Peninsula Marathon is a 42.2km WPA Championships race.

Age Limit

The Cape Peninsula Marathon and Half Marathon are open to all licenced and non-licenced runners of 16 years and older for the Half Marathon and 20 years and older for the Marathon.

Licenced Runners

Licenced runners should wear club colours. Official event race number to be worn on the front. Registered athletes must wear their ASA licences on the front and back of their vest. The race number must be worn on the front of the vest, partially covering the ASA licence, so that the ASA licence sponsor remains visible. Temporary licenced runners must wear the race number on the front of their vest and the temporary licence on the back.

Temporary Licenced Runners

Temporary licences are available at R60 for the 21.1km and R70 for the 42.2km event.

Temporary licenced participants are eligible for age category prizes provided they enter the relevant age group, wear the appropriate age tags and provide proof of age.

Unlicenced runners must wear plain clothes (no advertising permitted). Official event race number to be worn on the front and the temporary licence number on the back.

Personal Seconding

Personal seconding is not permitted, except at official refreshment stations. Private vehicles are requested not to follow the athletes on the route.

Age Category Prizes

In addition to overall (Open) prizes, participants will only be eligible for an age category prize in the age category they enter. Corresponding numerical age category tags must be worn on the front and back of their club vest. Participants may enter the age category corresponding to their chronological age or any younger category down to senior.

Athletes competing for a category prize must wear age category tags (on the front and the back).

No swopping of race numbers or disposable chips as these are linked to your name and finishing time and may result in your disqualification.

Club colours must be worn to qualify for team prizes.

Each race distance has a different race number range and colour with your data captured electronically. Do not transfer between races without notifying the race organisers.

Foreign Athletes

Foreign athletes must comply with IAAF rule 4.2 and all relevant race and domestic rules. If required the athlete must be able to produce a letter from his/her federation permitting participation on race day.


Kilometre markers will be placed at each kilometre mark.

Refreshments stations will be situated approximately every 3km.

Toilets will be available at the start and finish.

Parking is available at the finish.

Tog Bags

There will be tog bag facilities. Bags dropped off at runners’ own risk. The organisers will be not be held responsible for any loss or damages.

Prize giving will take place at 10h30.

For safety reasons the use of personal music players with headphones is not allowed. Use of such device in contravention of IAAF rule 144.3b may be disqualified and will not be eligible for individual or team prizes.

Temporary license holders when registering must complete and hand in the tear off strip from the number in order to be eligible to compete.

Do not litter. Dispose of sachets and cups responsibly by using the boxes provided or carrying them to the Finish. Report offenders to the referees. #RunClean.

Event route description


Your timing chip will be placed on your race number. The race number must be worn on the front of your vest and visible at the finish line. There is a foam strip on the back of the race number. Please do not remove the timing chip and foam strip from the race number – doing so will result in NO finish time. For safety and timing purposes, ONLY the person assigned to this race number may use it.

The Cape Peninsula Marathon is a 42.2km WPA Championships race.

Durbanville Children’s Home

Durbanville Children’s Home is a Child and Youth care centre (NPO 011-891) based in Durbanville, Cape Town. Children in need of care are placed in the care of Durbanville Children’s Home by the South African courts. We are registered to care for 144 children between the ages of 2 – 18 years. We have an excellent track record in child and youth care.

We received a Ministerial Youth Excellence Award in 2017, for building educational, training and skills development capacity. Our program is aimed at avoiding the ‘warehousing of children’ by; strengthening their emotional resilience and increasing their capacity for learning, supporting them through their transition to adulthood and enabling them to become productive corporate citizens. Dedicated bus services will shuttle participants back to their start points from the finish periodically.
Traffic Officers will assist in the management of traffic and marshalls will be deployed all along the route to
direct participants.
