The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC) was opened in 1999 as the first multi-disciplinary service (one-stop) centre for abused women and children in the country.

Situated in Manenberg on the Cape Flats, an area with extremely high rates of crime, gangsterism, child abuse, unemployment, substance abuse and domestic violence, the Centre provides services to a wide range of under resourced areas: neighbouring townships, farming communities in the Phillippi, Constantia, and Stellenbosch areas, and ‘informal’ settlements.

These services include a 24-hour crisis response; a residential shelter and transitional housing for abused women and their children, legal assistance and job-skills training.

Their vision is to help create a safe and secure society and a human rights culture where women and children are empowered to exercise their full rights.

Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Operation Smile South Africa is part of the global non-profit, volunteer medical services organisation which provides free reconstructive surgery to children and adults with cleft lips and/or cleft palates in over 60 countries worldwide.

Over the last 30 years, Operation Smile has offered hundreds of thousands of life changing procedures. The success of the organisation is due to the amazing volunteer, diplomatic, corporate and individual support that the organisation receives.

Together with partners such as the SPAR Women’s Challenge, Operation Smile SA is able to create change, provide hope and give people, who would not otherwise have the opportunity and chance, to live a normal life.

For more information on Operation Smile South Africa please visit their website www.operationsmile.org.za
