Stellenbosch Feeding in Action was established in 1994 as a sustainable feeding programme to help poor and vulnerable people in the Stellenbosch Municipal area to meet their most basic need; to have sufficient and nutritious food. Our founder, Dr Dora Steyn, saw the great need for food in the community and ‘Stellenbosch Feeding in Action’ started in 1994 as a single feeding point reaching out to the poor in Central Stellenbosch. In keeping with this vision, Feeding in Action has grown over the last 26 years to an organisation that serves approximately 12 000 meals and distributes ± 1000 food parcels to almost 5000 people each week! Our aim is to provide nutritious and satisfying food to anyone who is hungry, whether they are struggling households or people who are homeless, sick or vulnerable. We believe that no hungry person should ever be turned away. We are especially focused on feeding vulnerable children who need sufficient food and nutrition to grow and stay healthy by providing meals at certain schools, crèches and aftercare centres as well as after school feeding points in twelve disadvantaged communities in and around Stellenbosch. We also reach out to needy children at cultural and sports outreach programmes with the provision of a meal or food parcel before they participate in the various activities.Meals and food parcels are distributed throughout the region to currently 45 feeding points which are run by our amazing group of volunteers who are involved in preparing and cooking hot balanced meals and serving it to thousands of needy beneficiaries. The food supplies are distributed from our premises at Woodmill to our feeding points in various communities. We also have volunteers and staff at our central kitchen and office assisting us with various duties.Stellenbosch Feeding in Action hope to get involved in the near future with a food garden project which would enable us to provide more fresh supplies for balanced feeding to our feeding points. To feed people in a humane way means to provide meals containing all the necessary nutritional value for healthy living. Currently we are part of a group of organisations forming a ‘Food Platform’ in Stellenbosch which aims to address the food security problem in more sustainable manner. We realised anew the great need for such a Platform during the Covid-19 pandemic. We at Feeding in Action believe that we can better succeed in helping the vulnerable if we also work in collaboration with other organisations to improve food security in our local community which were statistically 28% food insecure (now probably even more). Stellenbosch Feeding in Action became part of a team together with other organisations of the SCAN Network (Stellenbosch Civil Advocacy Network) during the pandemic. Due to the fact that we built up an infrastructure with feeding over many years with currently more than 45 feeding points we automatically played a strong supportive role in the crisis and network. SFA assisted to coordinate the purchasing and distribution of a few thousand food parcels during the beginning of the lockdown. We have now reverted mostly back to our original system of the distribution of food supplies and the preparation of meals at our feeding points.Over 25 organisations are assisted by Feeding in Action with food and supplies, including Stellenbosch Disaster Management, Youth Outreach, Vision Afrika, International Student Ministry, Unakho (Centre for disabled children) and many more. We also support outreach programmes and upliftment projects for the youth during school holidays. Through our network of organisations, we are able to reach even more young people in need every year.
